Building a network isn’t about the number of followers, views, or random connections. It’s about creating an eco-system that actually works for you. Here’s how I think about it:
1) ECO-SYSTEM
- The number of followers, views, and silly connections are worthless if you don’t have an eco-system.
- You need a web of 50 good contacts you can trust.
Example:
An investment banker shows me a great CFO candidate. That CFO connects me with a great attorney. That attorney tells me about a fund formation and a firm hiring seven investment professionals.
That’s $750,000 in fees.
Bing bang bao… (Pesci voice in Casino, LOL).
2) WEBS
- I have really deep connections. A network without depth is like a rolodex collecting dust.
- But with depth? That’s what saves you when you’re about to fall off the cliff.
- Instead of trying to grow your network endlessly, get to know the people already in it.
- Teasing them with intel or market updates is always welcomed.
- Think of me as the Shams of Business (like the ESPN insider who broke the Luka trade, LOL).
3) PRO-BONO
- I make connections without asking for anything in return.
- That builds goodwill. That makes you feel good.
- Every time I get nervous about ARR, I make an introduction.
- And then? The song “Superstar” by Lupe Fiasco goes off in my head. Instant good vibes, LOL
- At Succession, we believe this is what makes your network truly potent:
- Build an eco-system.
- Go deep, not wide.
- Give without expecting.
- I hope this helps you.
